Smugglers Cove Beach

Smugglers Cove (Busby Head Loop)

  • The Vibe: A secluded, postcard-perfect crescent bay framed by ancient trees.

  • Best For: Safe swimming, snorkeling, and a beautiful family-friendly walk.

  • Getting There: Park at the Urquharts Bay carpark. A short, easy 20-minute walk over the grassy saddle brings you straight out onto this pristine, sheltered beach.

Pataua South

  • The Vibe: A charming, classic Kiwi seaside community centered around a stunning tidal estuary.

  • Best For: Jumping off the famous footbridge at high tide, paddleboarding, and family picnics.

  • Insider Tip: Walk across the iconic wooden footbridge to Pataua North if you want to access a beautiful, raw ocean surf beach.

  • Frogtown Beach: a hidden away beach that is a real gem. As you enter the Pataua South settlement, turn left onto Mahanga Road (following the signs toward the Treasure Island campground)

Top Scenic Walks & Hikes in Whangārei Heads

Mount Manaia Track

  • Time: 2 hours return

  • Distance: 4 km return

  • Difficulty: Moderate (Steep climb with over 1,100 stairs)

  • The Experience: The absolute crown jewel of local walks. You will climb steadily through lush, regenerating native forest and groves of nikau palms until you reach the towering, jagged volcanic peaks at the summit.

  • The Reward: A spectacular, unobstructed 360-degree panorama of Whangārei Harbour, Bream Bay, and the offshore Hen and Chicken Islands.

  • Insider Tip: The rock lookout at the very top is exposed and lacks safety barriers. Keep children close and take extra care if it’s a windy day.

Smugglers Bay Loop Track

  • Time: 1.5 hours

  • Distance: 3 km loop

  • Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

  • The Experience: A fantastic, diverse loop starting from the Urquharts Bay carpark. The trail takes you through open farmland grazing with cattle, into beautiful coastal broadleaf forest, and right down onto the white sands of secluded Smugglers Cove.

  • History Bonus: Keep an eye out for the historic World War II gun emplacements hidden along the headland.

Peach Cove Track

  • Time: 3 hours return

  • Distance: 5.7 km return

  • Difficulty: Moderate to Hard (Many steep, narrow steps)

  • The Experience: A heart-pumping hike that climbs straight up one side of the Bream Head ridge and drops sharply down the other side. You’ll weave through beautiful, pest-free coastal forest alive with native bird call.

  • The Reward: You emerge onto the pristine, isolated sands of Peach Cove—a perfect spot for a quiet, secluded midday swim.

Reotahi Coastal Walkway

  • Time: 1.5 hours one way

  • Distance: 2.8 km

  • Difficulty: Easy

  • The Experience: An easy-going, mostly flat gravel track that hugs the edge of the Reotahi Marine Reserve. It’s a gorgeous afternoon stroll shaded by massive, ancient pōhutukawa trees.

  • Highlights: You’ll pass the fascinating, concrete ruins of a historic meat freezing works that operated in the early 1900s.
